Reading Specialist Department: Instructional Staff Employment Type: Full Time Location: Detroit Academy of Arts and Sciences Reporting To: Lead Instructional Specialist Compensation: $51,300 - $88,700 / year Description The Foundational Literacy Specialist utilizes data to provide targeted foundational literacy intervention to identified students in grades 6-8 who are reading significantly below grade level, focusing on closing foundational skill gaps while building content knowledge and student confidence. Qualifications MA, MS or beyond in curriculum and instruction, literacy education, or reading Valid Michigan Teacher Certification with subject area endorsement At least three years of successful, high quality, teaching experience at the middle school level with excellent performance ratings preferred Specialized training or certification in adolescent literacy, structured literacy, or reading intervention preferred Proven record of excellence as a classroom teacher, particularly in literacy instruction Experience facilitating professional learning for teachers Demonstrated knowledge of foundational literacy skills including phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension strategies Knowledge of the core curriculum requirements for middle school English Language Arts preferred Ability to work collaboratively with staff and build positive relationships with parents Demonstrated ability to design and implement individualized instructional plans for adolescent learners Understanding of the unique literacy challenges facing middle school students reading below grade level Key Responsibilities Teach targeted foundational literacy intervention to small groups of middle school students daily using research-based, age-appropriate strategies and resources Provide differentiated instruction in foundational reading skills (phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension) to individual students or small groups of students in grades 6-8 Address foundational literacy gaps while maintaining the dignity and engagement of adolescent learners through age-appropriate materials and instructional approaches Use data from standardized tests, diagnostic assessments, classroom observations, and course grades to develop an intervention plan that will accelerate academic progress toward grade-level proficiency Communicate regularly with parents, content area teachers, and support staff regarding the progress of students on their caseload Develop effective student learning experiences that engage and stimulate learning while addressing foundational skill deficits Collaborate with content area teachers to support literacy development across all subject areas Participate in the response to intervention process and multi-tiered systems of support Maintain an eligible/active students caseload that outlines the service being provided as well as the projected goals and progress monitoring data Practice and reinforce decoding strategies, sight word recognition, vocabulary development, reading fluency, and comprehension strategies appropriate for adolescent learners Build students\' reading stamina, confidence, and motivation to read Incorporate high-interest, age-appropriate texts that connect to students\' lived experiences and interests Support students in developing independent reading skills and self-advocacy Other duties and responsibilities as designated by district leadership Physical Requirement Light Work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds of force as frequently as needed to move objects. Terms of Employment Salary and benefits shall be paid consistent with the District’s approved compensation plan. Length of the work year and hours of employment shall be those established by the District.
