Job Description

Directs, manages and coordinates the daily administrative, clinical and operational activities of the (24x7) cardioperfusion services within Yale-New Haven Hospital and external contracts, collaborating with physicians and multidisciplinary professional staff to provide services consistent with the hospital's mission and contractual agreements. The department of cardioperfusion provides a variety of specialized services including cardiopulmonary bypass for adults and children, the operation of cell saver equipment for cardiac, vascular, orthopedic, trauma and OB/GYN cases, isolated limb perfusion for plastic surgery cases, veno-venous perfusion for liver transplantation, ECMO support for neonatal and pediatric patients, a variety of ventricular assist device services (Abiomed, Worldheart and Jarvik), IABP support, and emergent perfusion for failed angioplasty or other cardiac emergencies. The department also operates and maintains the POC stat lab within the OR environment.

Responsibilities:
  • 1. Coordinates the daily work activities of the perfusionists based on caseload and physician demands.
  • 2. Coordinates the requests of cardiac surgeons for individual personnel to perform perfusion support on specific cases such as congenital heart cases in neonates.
  • 3. Personally performs perfusion cases necessary to maintain credentials and meet caseload demand.
  • 4. Sets the standards for perfusion required to ensure safe state-of-the-art services to all areas covered. This includes delineation of safety procedures to be observed by all perfusionists and defining the role of the perfusionists, indicating what independent actions can be taken and which actions require consultation with the anesthesiologist or surgeon in charge of the case.
  • 5. Determines fiscal requirements and makes budgetary recommendations, monitors costs and expenditures in a fiscally responsible manner.
  • 6. Evaluate capital equipment and disposable items used in conjunction with department functions and determine in consultation with the perioperative leadership team those items that will best meet our needs and budget.
  • 7. Administers personnel actions according to hospital policy and procedures.
  • 8. Recruits skilled staff and orients and closely supervises new staff members. Sets up a program for proctoring of each new individual based upon judgments stemming from the new staff members' previous training and experience.
  • 9. Ensures adequate levels of staff and resources are available to meet patient and physician needs and financial parameters.
  • 10. Coaches, counsels, and disciplines staff members and plans monitors and appraises job results.
  • 11. Develops staff by providing information, educational and experiential growth opportunities.
  • 12. Resolves complaints from surgeons and /or anesthesiologists regarding the performance of individual staff members.
  • 13. Generates the monthly call schedule, ensuring fair and equitable distribution of weekday, weekend and holiday call and grants time off requests based on departmental needs. Publishes the call schedule on a monthly basis no later than the 12th of the previous month. Submits daily call schedule monthly to the SPOR call book.
  • 14. All KRONOS responsibilities i.e., schedule entry daily review and sign off. Monitors for and reports on any overtime abuse by staff members.
  • 15. Administration of contractual arrangements for perfusion services outside of Yale-New Haven Hospital including pricing calculations and billing preparation.
  • 16. Administration of perfusion student clinical training agreements with accredited perfusion programs.
  • 17. Works with POC coordinator to ensure the Perfusion Lab meets CAP standards.
Qualifications:

EDUCATION:
Minimum high school diploma or equivalent, prefer Associates degree in Biological Sciences. Factory approved
training in basic trouble shooting for anesthesia machines, physiologic monitors, blood gas machines, rapid infusers.
EXPERIENCE:
Internal: Minimum of Twelve months experience as an anesthesia technician II or equivalent health care experience . Experience as a charge anesthesia technician preferred
LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION:
CPR certification
