Position Overview:
French-American International School is looking to hire a costume designer/ costume shop manager/ costumer to take on all costuming needs in the upper school theater program from December 2023 - June 2024.
Qualified candidates will bring professional training, skills and experience in costume design and shop management. Experience working with middle and/or high school students is also highly desired. Under the supervision of the school’s in-house Technical Director and Artistic Director, this person would:
1/ Oversee and support a team of student costume designers to create costumes for One Act Plays (December 2023-January 2024). Help with fittings, adjustments, etc. Be present during tech week (January 27 - 9-5pm, then January 20, 30, and 31 - from 2pm-7pm) and help with cleaning and re-organization of costumes.
2/ Design and create costumes for two full-scale productions. This includes a spring play, produced in March 2024 (with “tech week” - March 2 - 9-5pm, then March 4, 5, 6- from 2pm-7pm). There is a middle-school play, in May 2024 - (with “tech week” - on May 4 9am-5pm, then May 6, 7, 8 - from 2pm-7pm.)
3/ Undertake “Costume Shop Manager” duties, so help with organization and maintenance of the costume shop and costume stock. This includes helping pull some costumes for class projects and overseeing an end-of-season clean up.
4/ Work with assistant student designers on major productions and, for each show, train and support a student “wardrobe” team that will maintain, organize and clean costumes throughout the “run” of each show, as well as help with hair and makeup for each production. (The costume designer is typically present during tech week, but not during the run of the show.)
NOTE: Outside of “tech weeks” - the work can be scheduled flexibly - and will vary week to week. Ideally, the designer/ costume manager will attend the weekly theater team meeting and production meeting (2-hours/week) and work with students during the regularly scheduled “tech time”, one afternoon per week. (These are currently all on Mondays, but could be potentially rescheduled.)
Salary for this position: $3,000 - $17,000 dependent upon duties undertaken.
