Schneps Media is the leading local news media company in New York, dedicated to serving communities with trusted news and valuable content. We empower local businesses, both small and large, by providing highly effective advertising solutions that drive growth.

Schneps Media seeks an Editor for the Bronx Times local news outlet.

The Bronx Times Editor is responsible for all content and layout of the weekly publications as well as BXTimes.com. The editor will lead the team to create compelling content, original story ideas, break news and focus on growing and driving repeat visitors to the website. They will also work closely with our citywide editorial team to collaborate on long-term projects and special sections.

Responsible for overseeing the day-to-day editorial operations of the Bronx team, including:

• Constantly monitor emails, social media and other local media outlets to stay on top of the latest news and help break it when needed.

• Assign stories to staff based on story ideas and tips from emails, social media and other sources.

• Proof all stories on BXTimes.com backend, including editing copy and headlines, before they go live on the website.

• Oversees and assigns freelancers to cover assignments, processes their copy/pictures and posts them on the website.

• Builds the weekly print publication. Pulls the stories over from the website through WordPress2Print and places them in templates through Master Page Builder.

• Works with production on proofing pages as they are built, and creating the cover page, including procuring images for the cover and supplying text teasers.

• Procures copy for columns and op-eds and ensures they are published online and in print.

• Procures images and works with designers on the creation of special photo pages.

• Supervises the creation of special sections and projects, including obtaining copy and images when necessary.

• Writes at least one story per day

• Participates in regular meetings with other NYC editors to share story ideas and coordinate story syndication.

• Responsible for recruiting staff and interns for team

• Reports directly to Chief Content Officer

• Responsible for reviewing site traffic and having team implement best practices to achieve traffic goals

The ideal candidate:

• Must live in and have a strong knowledge of New York City

• Have strong communication skills

• Have at least 3 years of experience in a newsroom

• Is digitally savvy with a strong knowledge of CMS such as Wordpress

• Capable of working under deadlines and a flexible schedule

• Be a team player capable of mentoring young staff and working with newsroom veterans in creating the best product possible.

Salary range: $55,000 - $75,000
